Interview: Bamboo Guerillas

We are super excited to introduce a new Artist to Roots That Rocks fans! Check out this cool interview we did with Gavin of Bamboo Guerillas:

1. Hi Gavin, we love your music and would love to know what first got you into music?

My parents knew my love for music at the age of four years old because I would always be playing my father's country music on his record player. I then started playing the piano at around 7yrs old and then followed that by playing the saxophone. Soon realising that I was unable to sing whilst playing the saxophone, I then ditched the sax. I then grew up listening to different genres and listen to almost anything. I suppose I then developed pretty late and I am a self taught guitar player.

I have played in many bands, some original and some cover bands, but mainly as just the lead singer.

2. Tell us about the creation of Bamboo Guerillas

The band was formed after the passing of my father in December 2020. I wrote Chasing Shadows in memory of my father, who we were unable to visit in hospital due to Corona virus restrictions. This was my way of saying goodbye.

I then quickly had the inspiration and motivation to write 'Walked Away'', and before that was complete I messed around with four or five other song ideas, but never actually finished any of those projects. Once I wrote 'Jail Of My Doubts', I realised I had to get these tracks recorded properly and I made the decision to make a full album.

The name Bamboo Guerillas comes from a 1977 controversial guerilla warfare novel which my father wrote. I saw the book and suddenly realised what a great band name, plus it would be a great tribute to him. Had he not passed away, I don't think Bamboo Guerillas would even exist, but life can take you in different directions.

3. If you could open a show for one artist who would that be? And why?

think supporting a band like Foo Fighters would be an awesome gig. They are a huge band across the world and I think our music has elements that are similar. Melodic catchy riffs and melodies and all their songs are different and not too generic.

4. How would you describe Bamboo Guerillas?

Bamboo Guerillas is as a rock/pop band, with crunchy and catchy guitar riffs, exciting synths, keyboards and SFX, combined with gritty, melodic and catchy vocal layers. With heartfelt relatable lyrics, I think we sound quite unique.

5. What is the one question you would give your fans?

Always have hope, and believe in yourself.
